Lesson Plan of the Month
"The Entrepenuer"
This month's topic is exceptionally personal to me. I have only worked two jobs in my entire life as an employee. One when I was 16 years old - working at a picture frame company called "Frame Buffs" the other as a clerk at a video store called "Video Connection." I worked so hard at the video store that at the age of 17, I was promoted to manager. Soon after I became partners with the owner and opened a landscape design business. I later on at the age of 17.5 opened my own business and have never worked for anyone again.
So I guess you can say I am spoiled. I have made my own hours, gone away on vacation whenever I wanted and did what I wanted my entire life. Now as a multiple business owner, a public speaker, consultant and author I am still proud to say I am paving my way. This is why I am so passionate about sharing this topic of the month with my TLCD class.
The lesson
So far we have discussed how to brain storm. We have spoken about turning your hobby or a thing you love into your livelihood. With that being said, some of the kids came up with a myriad of different career paths, Vincent - saxophone lessons and sales, Athena - Customizing Violins, Kiara (my daughter) Authoring a book and selling it as well as a clothes line, Nick - his own clothes line, Joe - a t-shirt line, Tristan - Clothes line, Wheew alot of clothes lines - haha. Erin - a horticulturist's, Samantha - Printing custom designed note pads and Olivia - is undetermined as of yet.
Throughout the next few weeks we will be developing an action plan, with the next steps.
Week one -
1) Come up with a Name for your Company
2) Develop a logo
3) Develop a slogan - Meme - this is your saying that is your tag line. For example: L.I. Ninjutsu Centers "its not just kicking and punching its martial arts and beyond - discover the Ninja in you!?
4) Pick two products that you will be selling.
Week Two -
1) Develop a business plan - for any start up business there are few things that are imperative to the success of the start up. First - knowing your company and the product clearly, Second - establishing how much it will cost to start this company - from product line to sales and distribution. Third - Knowing your Target market who will purchase it and and how you will sell your product (distribution).
Week Three -
1) We will decide as to whether they want to experience this for real or just build a virtual business. We will then take on the products and make them from conceptions to completion. We will be showing you this every step of the way, on this web page. Some of the students already intend on taking their ideas and making them reality by producing a half dozen or so and selling them to students, friends and family. At that point we will speak about profitability and the cost of doing business.
Week Four -
1) We will start marketing and selling our product. This will be a grueling lesson, because it will be riddled with rejection, as well as trials and tribulations that all business owners go through. We will see who has the stick to it attitude which I call sticktoitiveness.
Overall I look forward to the next few weeks.
